Cast a Line in Grey County

/Kaleena Sanford - Grey County

Fishing has long been part of how people connect in Grey County, through shared mornings on the water, quiet afternoons by the shore, and stories that travel back home at the end of the day. With freshwater lakes, rivers, and streams across the region, anglers are drawn to places like Georgian Bay, the Beaver and Bighead Rivers, the Sydenham and Saugeen, and the accessible harbour wall in Owen Sound.

These waters are meant to be enjoyed thoughtfully. Anglers are encouraged to use public lands and access points unless permission has been granted by a landowner. A valid Ontario fishing licence is required, with local seasons and limits guided by Fisheries Management Zone 16.

As the water warms, Grey County’s fishing season gathers momentum. Smallmouth and Largemouth Bass, Pike, and Musky begin to move, creating opportunities for both spin and fly fishers. Spinners, spoons, Rapalas, and soft plastics are commonly used along structure and deeper channels, while fly anglers focus poppers and streamers where fish hold close to cover.

Each summer, Ontario’s Free Family Fishing Week - held in late June to early July - opens the door for families to fish without a licence, making it easier to pass along traditions and start new ones together.

The season culminates with one of the province’s most well‑known fishing derbies - the Salmon Spectacular - hosted in Owen Sound in late August by the Sydenham Sportsmen Association. It’s a celebration of skill, stewardship, and community—one more way fishing continues to bring people together in Grey County.
