While Grey County doesn’t boast the massive mountain ranges of Western Canada, the Niagara Escarpment’s steep pitches provide the best ski and snowboard conditions anywhere in Ontario. Whether you’re heading out as a family for the first time or challenging yourself on the black diamonds, everything you need - from lessons to rentals and accommodation to eateries- is all here.
Blue Mountain Resort
Blue Mountain Resort is the crown jewel of Grey County’s ski and snowboard region. With 42 trails ranging from beginner to double black diamond, the resort also has 2 terrains parks, 1 super pipe and 14 lifts (including 5 magic carpets and 5 high speed lifts) to keep you moving. Private Ski Clubs
Complimenting Blue Mountain’s ample terrain are several private ski clubs: Alpine Ski Club, Beaver Valley Ski Club, Toronto Ski Club, Osler Bluff Ski Club, Craigleith Ski Club, and Georgian Peaks Ski Club. These local private clubs, along with Blue Mountain, have produced some of Canada’s top ski and snowboard racing and freestyle talent, names often found on Canada’s Winter Olympic roster.
Safety First!
If you’re a first time skier or boarder, you’ll need the basics. Winter temperatures can be frigid in Grey County and dressing for the cold weather can make or break your on-hill debut. You’ll need waterproof, warm snow pants and a winter jacket, a helmet and goggles. There are some great views from the top of the escarpment so a camera is recommended. Hand warmers make a welcome addition to your setup, for fingers and toes—as well as keeping camera and phone batteries alive. It’s a good idea to carry some cash – you never know when you’ll need a hot chocolate or a mountain-top Beaver Tail ASAP. Ski and snowboard rental equipment is available on-resort at Blue Mountain and at surrounding ski/snowboard shops. Don’t own a ski suit? Don’t worry! You are able to rent outdoor gear from Alpine Sports.
